This warm-hearted tale takes you on a journey from sukkah to sukkah during the fun-filled festival of Sukkot. Each decorated hut holds a new surprise, including crafting hand-made treasures, tasting delicious harvest foods and peeking at the twinkling stars through the s'chach roofs. With vibrant illustrations, this is a wonderful celebration of the spirit of community and Jewish tradition.
What is Sukkot?
Sukkot is a seven-day Jewish festival (Feast of Taberacles) beginningvon the 15th of Tishri, celebrating the autumn harvest and commemorating the 40-year wandering of the Iraelites in the desert. It is celebrated by building, decorating, and dwelling in a temporary, foliage-covered hut called sukkah, and by shaking or waving the lulav and etrog, acting as a prayer to protect crops and bring beneficial rain and winds. It is a time for joy and gratitude.
Sukkot is one of my favorites! That’s why I’m so excited my forthcoming book, The Sukkah Hop, will be available August 2026.
I never forgot the first sukkah hop I went to with my kids and I wanted to share the experience in a book!
Sukkot takes place outdoors during the beautiful, colorful fall season.
Sukkot honors our gratitude for harvest foods and farming.
Sukkot is a time to bring family and friends together for celebration and good eats!
And it just so happens that when I was about ten years old, we adopted a dog during Sukkot that I named Sooki!
My connections to Sukkot run deep. Several years ago I was interviewed by the magazine Lilith for an article about Sukkot, “Eco-Ushpizin: Women Take On The Environment” about the tradition of inviting mystical guests — known as ushpzin into the sukkah.
I also wrote an article about Sukkot for The Forward, “Why Gefilte Fish is the Perfect Symbol for Sukkot” about my foodie matriarchs.
